The Hill Country

Season · Jan – Apr · Aug – Sep

Above four thousand feet, Ceylon becomes another country — cooler, quieter, greener than seems reasonable. The British came for the altitude and stayed for the tea; what they left behind is a landscape of emerald geometry, waterfalls that appear and vanish with the mist, and bungalows where the fireplace is still lit at six.

Road and rail can be combined through the highlands. Train seats are subject to Sri Lanka Railways schedules and availability, so a private vehicle remains part of the practical route.
