Panchakarma, Read Slowly
Five Actions, Three Movements, and the Therapy Called Half of All Treatment
The name means five actions, and almost everything sold under it involves none of them. Panchakarma is not a massage menu; it is the classical system of deep purification - physician-directed, sequenced in three movements, and older than most nations. First comes Purvakarma, the preparation: the digestive fire kindled, medicated ghee taken in rising measure, warm oil and herbal steam loosening what has settled deep. Skipping this phase is the surest sign a programme is theatre.
Then the actions themselves - and here the texts are precise. No guest receives all five; the physician selects among Vamana, Virechana, Basti and Nasya according to constitution, strength and season. The old books call Basti ardha chikitsa - half of all treatment - because it addresses Vata, the governor of movement, nerves and elimination, and because it cleanses and rebuilds in the same gesture. In its gentlest daily form, Matra Basti, it suits even the depleted executive; in classical alternation - Niruha and Anuvasana - it reaches what nothing else reaches.
The third movement, Paschatkarma, is the one hurried retreats abandon: the graduated return, the rejuvenating Rasayana, the sleep held sacred, the written protocol that follows you home. Candour, because our guests prefer it: five nights is an introduction. The genuine article asks for seven to fourteen, begins with rigorous screening, and includes quiet mid-programme days that feel nothing like a holiday - that is the medicine working. Read slowly, arrive unhurried, and let the physicians keep the tempo.
